Spicy chocolate chip cookies!

A couple days ago I was in whole foods picking up some items for dinner when I came across a bag of ‘organic’ chocolate chips. I don’t think I’ve ever had organic chocolate chips before… or organic chocolate chip cookies for that matter. So I instantly grabbed a bag with the plan of making organic chocolate chip cookies.

At least that was the plan. Then I started looking for the other ‘organic’ ingredients, and tallying the cost of these special cookies in my head (i.e., $4 bucks for vanilla extract, $6 bucks for flour, $5 bucks for sugar, $5 bucks for milk, $6 bucks for eggs..etc). When I reached $30 bucks, I realized, I was going to have to veto the organic cookie plan.  But I decided to keep the chocolate chips in the basket because now my mind was set on chocolate chip cookies. I was going to have to figure out another way to make these special.

After a quick google search I found this interesting recipe for spicy chocolate chip cookies on the Bitten Sweet website. I love spicy food and I loved the idea of packing a hint of heat in some sweet cookies. I quickly got to work and assembled all of my ingredients and pulled these together really quickly. I made a few adjustments to the recipe based on what I had on hand. I used butter instead of margarine; I used Vietnamese cinnamon instead of regular cinnamon; and I excluded the pecans and rosemary. The recipe was so easy and the cookies were absolutely delicious! They had just the right combination of spicy and sweet and I definitely plan to make these again soon!
